The headline daily price is rarely the final price. Most surprise costs can be avoided if you know where to look.
The usual suspects
- Fuel policy. Full-to-full is usually the fairest. Pre-paid fuel is convenient but often overpriced.
- Young or senior driver fees. Common for drivers under 25 and sometimes over 70.
- Additional drivers. Usually a daily charge; check whether a partner is free.
- One-way and cross-border fees. Dropping the car in another city or country can add a large charge.
- Airport and out-of-hours surcharges. Convenience costs money, especially late at night.
- Tolls, fines and admin fees. Fines follow the car to the rental company, which may add a service charge.
Before you book
Compare the total price, not the daily rate. Check the mileage limit, the deposit amount and the excess. Look at the cancellation terms, which are often flexible.
Before you drive away
Inspect the car, photograph it and keep all paperwork. That routine is the single best protection against unfair damage claims.
