Do You Need an International Driving Permit to Rent?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your national licence, not a licence on its own. Whether you need one depends on your nationality, the country you visit and the rental company.

When it is usually needed

Some countries require an IDP for licences that are not in the Latin alphabet or not from certain agreements. Others accept your licence for short visits. Some rental companies ask for an IDP even when the law does not.

How to check

What to carry

Bring your original licence, the IDP if you have one, your passport, and the credit card in the main driver's name. Many rental desks will not release a car without a credit card in that name.

Requirements change, so confirm them shortly before you travel.
